One of my all-time favorite James Brown moments was seeing "The TAMI Show" too many years ago and watching Mr. Dynamite burn up the stage with his dancing while a sullen Mick Jagger watched from offstage, clearly recognizing that he would never match the master. Another favorite: His performance of "If I Ruled the World" on the old "Playboy After Dark" TV show. As fine a gospel performance as you'll ever hear from anyone.

I just thought of it but it seems to me that that layered funk you are talking about comes out of the music of howlin wolf and muddy waters, out of that electic chicago sound. Those bands had that sycopated layered thing going where most everyone is playing one line and they all interlock.

The other thing it makes me think of, strangely is samba and especially bossa nova. They get their beat going but then you play can it through the progressions. WIth the hard core funk, the mostly got rid of the progressions.

James Brown is so cool, I actually feel angry at people who mess up his hair and trying to picture him in that ugly police photo.

That's when I felt like organizing block party for whole week with nothng but FUNK and cheap beer.

Hi Jonathan,
I sent an email to your musicology.com account regarding Randy Newman-- but I'm not sure how often you check it, so I thought I'd give you a head's up here, too.
